Portucel Mozambique and its project for producing pulp and energy

Portucel Mozambique, founded by Navigator Company, is responsible for setting up Mozambique’s largest integrated forestry project for producing pulp and energy.

Few years back, Mozambique’s Council of Ministers granted the company a permit to use up to 356 thousand hectares of land over a renewable period of 50 years, for a project regarded as socially and economically beneficial for the country and particularly for Manica and Zambézia provinces.

With a funding from the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (20%), Portucel Mozambique will establish eucalyptus tree plantations on these huge areas, and a pulp mill for producing pulp.

The total investment is about MZN 3 billion. The pulp mill will have a production capacity of 1,500,000 tons per year and a biomass power generation plant.

This plant, which is expected to be operational by 2023, will double the global pulp production capacity of the Navigator Company, currently at 1,440,000 tons per year.
